Electronic cigarettes are still in the limelight within this week as government body, Public Health England (PHE) has said for the first time that e-cigarettes are less damaging to health than smoking tobacco. This new means that they may start being prescribed by the NHS to help smokers quit. This new debate comes after e-cigarettes are being used more and more every day.

Currently e-cigarettes are used by 2.6 million adults, and PHE have announced today that, even that e-cigarettes aren’t free from risk, they believe that e-cigarettes could make a ‘significant contribution to the endgame for tobacco’.

At the moment GPs and stop smoking services are not allowed to prescribe any e-cigarettes for medicine purposes. With GPs being allowed to prescribe e-cigarettes, this could help people who are trying to quit a lot easier than stopping altogether.

As recent studies from The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has found there is no real danger of smokers becoming addicted to tobacco by using e-cigarettes as many previously thought.

Long term vaping could be the best option for smokers who are trying to quit as the PHE have estimated that e-cigarettes are about 95% less harmful than tobacco. multiCIG welcomes the news that e-cigarettes are being seen as a helpful alternative to unhealthy smoking and looks forward to the news to follow this in the future.
