David Cameron has voiced his support for e-cigarettes this week at Prime Ministers Questions.
The PM, who himself has spoken out about his struggle to move away from tobacco, was keen to back up his opinion with research from PHE released in August of this year, which suggested that vaping is 95% safer than smoking traditional cigarettes.
“I think we do need to be guided by the experts, we should look at the report from Public Health England. But it is promising to see more than a million are estimated to have used e-cigarettes to help them quit or have replaced smoking with e-cigarettes completely.”
Cameron was also in favour of promoting electronic devices as a cessation aid and as a healthier alternative to tobacco products, and spoke of the wide scale he thought their benefits could reach.
“I think we should be making clear that this is a very legitimate path for many people to improve their health and therefore the health of the nation.”
In the UK, around 2.6 million people are estimated to be users of e-cigarettes, which do not contain the toxins and harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke.
