This week, Nottingham City Council announced launch smoke-free zones in major outdoors spaces and events, but the ban will not include e-cigarettes.
The second city in the UK to launch smoke free zones in outdoor spaces and events, Nottingham takes after Bristol in aiming to reduce people smoking in high footfall areas. The ban is voluntary, there will be no fines or enforcement, with a request from the council that people do not smoke.
Council members including portfolio holder for adults and health at Nottingham City Council Alex Norris are hoping the ban will have positive impact on health. “It’s a major cause of illness and explains much of the differences in health between the richest and poorest in our city.” explained Councillor Norris.
multiCIG are delighted that Nottingham City Council are not including e-cigarettes in the employment of the smoking ban in public space. Evidence has suggested that e-cigarettes are less harmful than tobacco alternatives so the smoke-free zones implementation decision marks a new opportunity for people to consider moving away from traditional tobacco products.
