The Welsh government’s controversial plans to ban e-cigarettes in all enclosed public and work places has been dropped.
The proposed prohibition, which would have made e-cig use illegal in places such as school, restaurants, cafes and public transport faced opposition from a number of health groups and charities as well as opposition parties.
First Minister Carywn Jones said “There is no point trying to bang our head against a brick wall when it comes to e-cigs. The Public Health Bill will be brought back to the assembly but clearly there is no point including the provisions on e-cigs when we know they are not going to get through.”
The British Heart Foundation previously branded the Welsh proposal as “heavy-handed”, and the Public Health Bill will now be tabled again minus the changes that reference e-cigarettes.
